Prestige Cloth (Dance or Costume Accessory)
Dida people, Ivory Coast
First half, 20th century
Resist-dyed raffia, natural dyes
16" x 17"  (40.5 cm x 43 cm)

Mounted on wood stretcher

The highly textured, three-dimensional surface of this small weaving, which is complete with all four edges, is a result of the pleating and binding of the dyeing process. The ridges and valleys of each resist-dyed lozenge, and the rich earthtone colors, are evocative of a topographic map.
