Blanket, Sekomandi Toraja people, Galumpang region of Central Sulawesi, Indonesia Ca. 19th century Thick homespun cotton and natural dyes 50” x 64” Price on Request These blankets were
used in a variety of ceremonies as hangings and as
shrouds. They were sometimes used to receive an important family member’s last breath, the accumulation of which gave these blankets a
gravitas or force that reverberated with the collective voice and the
guidance of one’s
accumulated ancestors. Like a pioneer's bible, these cloths
witnessed and blessed important events, and were handed down to successive generations.
