Spoon
Tlingit people, Northwest Coast of America
Mid 19th century
Horn
3" (w) x 11" (h) x 4" (d)

These spoons depict supernatural and ancestral beings, natural phenomena and animal and human characters. The intricately carved handle tells a story, and like a totem pole, the emblems are “read” from the bottom upwards to understand their meanings. These spoons were used by the Tlingit and Haida to serve food at ceremonies, with the dual purpose of feeding themselves, and the ancestral figures carved on the handle.
