Ainu Tray 781
Japan Wood
19th/early 20th Century
Approx. 8" by 8"

The Ainu had a repertoire of traditional motifs they used in both wood carving and in textiles which while appearing similar were not quite the same. We are able to sense the creative hand of the artist in the interpretation of a traditional foliated pattern that has something of a mandala effect when viewed.
