This richly gilded shrine pedestal consists of three pieces, with a removeable upper tray platform finished on both sides with black lacquer. The upper platform is anchored to the lower portion with four pointed wooden pins, an example of a traditional Japanese carpentry technique that dates back to the 7th century.
