Bali Art Deco Mask 30682
Bali, Indonesia
Wood
1930's
6.5x6/10.5x10cm

The decades between the World Wars were a very important period in the art history of Bali. European artists like Walter Spies brought fresh ideas that rejuvenated the by then moribund painting and sculpture traditions with an Art Deco flair. For the first time some carvings were left in their "nude" wood state that had an appeal for visiting tourists and Dutch civil servants. This mask came back to the Netherlands as a curio and is reminiscent of masks of a similar aesthetic and nude appearance brought back by the author Vicki Baum in the 1930's and now in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
