Shields of this style are most often associated with the Kayan-Kenyah cultural complex, though other Dayak tribes display similar fanged protector deities, known as Kambe or Udog. They are made from a light hard wood, jelutong, painted with natural resins and decorated with scalp hair from the trophy heads of their vanquished foes.
