Ngaju Ancestral Guardian Figure (Hampatong)
Dayak, Central Borneo
Late 19th / early 20th century
Wood
H: 35”

This statue is a memorial portrait of an important male ancestor of a type that was generally placed in the front court of the longhouses of the Melawi, Kahayan, Ot Danum and Ngaju peoples of central Borneo.

It’s a soulful example -- holding a feasting cup which serves as a reminder that when ritual cycles are properly honored, protection and grace for the deceased is achieved.
