Cache Sexe, “Underskirt” of a Girl’s Apron
Gnau Culture, West Sepik, Papua New Guinea
Mid 20th Century
Job’s Tears (a type of grass seed) and Fiber
8.5 Wide x 4.5 High (23.5 x 11.5 cm)
With stand: 7 High, Base 6.5” Wide x 2.5” Deep (17.5, 16.5 x 6.5 cm)

The understated elegance of these tribal “petticoats” have a subtle beauty – textural with a quiet movement.  For me, they evoke rain beading down a window.  This example was woven to provide a double curtain of modesty.  I have seen underskirts sized to provide a tantalizing small amount of modesty, for the uninhibited, to three layers thick and almost hip width.  On a custom stand painted to compliment the modesty skirt.
