Talipoon
Yangoru Boiken People, Papua New Guinea
Early/Mid 20th C
Green Turban Shell, Cane, Pigment Remnants
12" H x 7" W x 7" D

Basket weavings from the Boiken people, located in the Prince Alexander Mountains, are complex, clever and expressive.  The face is a representation of a bush or ancestral spirit.  I never weary of Talipoons and are in thrall at the artists’ ability to create endless, distinct personalities.  The mask is attached to a giant snail shell carved to hint at a sinuous, sculptural body.
