Benauq Skirt
Iban, Eastern Kalimantan, Borneo
Fibrous plant matter (daun doyo)
Early 20th century
43 1/2" x 31 1/2"

Unlike the cotton skirts of the Iban, it is made from fibrous plant matter (daun doyo) that is akin to other southeast Asian cultures that created weaving threads from the leaves of plants. The ikat pattern represents underworld serpents or dragons. These skirts are rare, and this skirt is from an old Dutch collection. It was originally acquired during colonial times.
