Dance Shield, Rwanda SOLD

Tutsi, Rwanda
Wood, pigment
Early to mid 20th Century
12 in/30 cm

The Tutsi excelled in their craft artistry, be it basketry or decorated wooden shields of this type that were used in traditional dances. Undecorated rattan shields were used during battle but these painted pieces had major ritual significance and each pattern appears to be unique. Good examples are rare and this piece came out of an Old Dutch Collection. #31152
