Lime container, Papua New Guinea

Middle Sepik River, Papua New Guinea
68 cm

A classic, finely sculpted and very elegant contact period (beginning 20th century or older) non-metal tool carved lime container. Remnants of a torn label in a turn of the 20th century German hand read “Kalk…” and then on the next line “KAR…” – Undoubtedly the full wording on the label was originally “Kalkbehalter” (lime container), and then “KARARAU” (the name of a Sepik village from which other containers of this type are known).

Formerly in a private German collection.
