Mendaka Pectoral, Sumba

Gold
Date unknown
3.2L x 0.8W in

One of great icons of Indonesian tribal gold, Mendakas display a form that resembles a nautilus shell; they have associations with jewelry of the Proto-Classic Period. This is one the earliest version I have ever encountered and may it self be of Proto-Classic Period (3rd-8th Century) and not derived there from. Compare with a similar piece published in “Gold Jewelry of the Indonesian Archipelago.”
