Tiny glass beads, are meticulously worked into this traditional hat that originally would have had a large red silk pompom attached to the front. Later pieces use larger beads and simpler designs. The Peranakan or Straits Chinese immigrated to the Malay archipelago and the British East Indies between the 15th and 17th centuries. Their traditional designs often have European floral subjects with colors influenced by Peranakan porcelain.
