Berber Ceramic Butter Churner
Morocco
Early 20th century
19 in. high x 20 in. long
With its swelling contours, the shape of this large ceramic vessel – probably used to churn butter – is evocative of a female form, delicately painted with the kind of talismanic designs associated with Berber women’s textiles and facial or body decoration.
Lines of painted “stitching” and the fine burnished patina similarly suggest a container sewn from of animal hide, perhaps the original model for the container. Custom stand.
