Bamileke Chief’s or Titleholder’s Hat
Cameroon Grasslands
Cotton, crocheted or knotting technique
11” high by 9” wide 28 x 23 cm
A rare, early 2oth century example of the iconic Cameroon headdress, ashetu, of exceptional height, richly textured with dozens of long fiber “tufts “ tipped and banded with red or blue, resembling hairstyles worn by high-status men for rituals and ceremonies in the Grasslands chieftaincies. Overall good condition with old repair of a hole, hidden by the tufts.
