Terracotta figurative sculptures found starting in 1928 on the Jos Plateau of Nigeria near the village on Nok are apparently the oldest known south of the Sahara. The triangular eyes and perforated pupils are distinctive. Nok was also one of the earliest ironworking cultures, as early as 1500BC.
