Bamileke peoples, Cameroon, Africa
Wood and leather
26” (66cm) long by 13” (33cm) wide
Early 20th century

A rare Bamileke Grasslands buffalo or bush cow mask retaining the original skin covering. The light wood has some loss and bug damage on one side, with the ear and tip of one horn  missing. The piece is quite stable and bug free now with a good dark patina from age and use. Even with the damage it is a strong piece with the flaring nostrils and large toothy mouth. Previously in the collection of Allan Stone, NY.
