Maximon, Maya People, Guatemala – SOLD

“Maximon”
Maya people, Guatemala
Late 19th or early 20th century
Wood, paint, cotton, straw
13” high x 6” width x 5” depth

A syncretic Mayan and Christian deity, a symbol of abundance to whom candles, tobacco and rum are offered. Maximon is an auspicious figure whose cult is still flourishing among the Mayan of Guatemala, especially near Lago Atlantan in the Highlands.

This is one of the oldest Maximon figures we have seen and is in excellent condition. The body has articulated arms and legs, it can be fully extended to 15 inches length. His outfit, a man’s suit denoting his wealth, as well as the leather boots which are painted black, is pleasingly torn and has acquired an ancient looking patina, attesting to the age of this powerful figure. A woven straw hat completes his outfit.
