Ndop Panel
Bamileke people, Cameroon Grasslands
Cotton strip weave with a two part dyeing process: stitch-resist indigo dye on a pre-dyed cloth
39 x 59 1/2 inches   (99 x 151 cm)

An exceptionally artistic, hand-drawn composition combining geometric patterns that express key Grasslands  cosmological signs and cultural emblems. This is one of three individually woven and patterned panels that were joined to make a long man’s skirt wrapper worn on formal and festive occasions such as masquerade performances. Ndop cloths were also displayed as hangings and backdrops on ceremonial and funerary occasions. The textiles are associated with royal patronage and the elite.
