These large power figures protected a community from forces that would do them harm. They were intermediaries through which the ancestors could bring their power to the living. Though influenced stylistically by the Songye and Lulua, their figures have distinctive abstracted qualities such as, in the case of this sculpture, the large head and the placement of the breasts.
