This was a woodworker’s tool used to determine if a line is plumb. On the top is the head of a Chinthe (guardian lion) surmounted by a bird. A string is attached to the back of the tool and lays in a groove on its front to keep the string straight as it hangs down over the tip. Attached to end of the string is a cast metal plumb bob which swings to show whether a line is true.
