Power Figure, Bakongo People, D. R. Congo

Power Figure (Nkisi Nkondi)
Bakongo people, D.R. Congo
Circa: 1940
Provenance: Grove Gallery, New York (a collaboration between Michael Oliver and Eric Robertson in 1979/1980)
Height: 11.5” / 30cm

This Nkisi was empowered by feathers, rather than the bilongo normally held in a mirrored sealed resin container on the head or torso of the figure. This figure also differs in that it has an attached woven raffia handle allowing the piece to be carried. Perhaps it served its protective function while being transported.
