Three Betel Containers
Islamic peoples, Mindanao, The Philippines
Bronze and silver
Early 20th century
Large 12” (30cm) wide, Medium 8” (20cm) wide, small 7” (18cm) wide

A set of three different Mindanao Betel ceremony containers. In many cultures it was customary to offer your guest betel to chew, and these fancy boxes would hold all the contents. The betel “quid” contains Areca nut and lime wrapped in a Betel leaf. These bronze boxes have a very thin inlay of silver to make the decorations, and a good patina from age and use. Large boxes are more important and rare, and smaller ones more common. The large box is missing one bird head on the front end. Many more photos are available on request.
