War Shield, Arrusi Peoples, Ethiopia

War Shield
Arrusi peoples, Ethiopia, Africa
Leather
Early 20th century
26” diameter

A rare “Bumpy” war shield from the Arrusi people of Ethiopia. This fine round example with high relief bump pattern is more rare then the classic Ethiopian shield with bumps and lines. The  buffalo hide is formed into a purposeful pattern that may distinguish the status of the owner. There is a native sewn repaired and  two small losses on the bottom edge. The overall patina is good and dark from age and use. Previously in the collection of Allan Stone, New York.
