War Shield
Lumi peoples, West Sepik Area, Papua New Guinea
Wood, rattan and bark
Early 20th century
40.5” (103 cm) tall by 29” (73.5 cm) wide

A very large and outstanding complete Lumi shield. The very well carved central image is both carved in relief and into the surface of the shield. The dark crusty patina is thick and typical of this area. The original bark and rattan handle is intact. A particularly good and old example of a classic New Guinea shield. Previously in the collection of Kirby Lewis, Lewis Wara Gallery, WA.
