Shield, Moro Peoples, Philippines – SOLD

War Shield
Moro peoples, Southern Philippines
Wood and rattan
19th century
32” (81cm) diameter

This rare large 19th century Moro shield is not in the best condition, but it is still beautiful. Carved from a single piece of wood with applied black pigment and rattan binding on the outer edge. The arm loop handle in the center is broken out, and this shield has been cut into four quarters and then put back together. I believe this shield was collected early in the American occupation of the Philippines and the person (most likely military personnel)  who brought it back had it cut to fit into his storage locker for the ship ride back to America.
