Possibly Mapuche, southern Chile or Argentina 
Glass beads, cotton stringing
8″ front to back, 6″ wide, 17″ fully extended 
20 x 15 x 43 cm

The shape of this headdress is similar to that of a rare group of Mapuche women’s headdresses, less than 15 are known, most in old European collections and in Argentina. The first one to be documented was published in The Araucanians, Edmond Reuel Smith, 1855 (Klaus Reprint New York 1971).
