A Fine “Abeti Aja” Cap
Yoruba, Nigeria
Probably Mid-20th Century
12.75” tall (32.4cm) x 7.75” wide (19.7cm)
Provenance: Laurent Bermudez, Berkeley
Traditionally worn by older men and especially drummers, and apparently now worn by younger men as well, the name “Abeti Aja” means “like dogs’ ears.” Flaps are seen worn up, down, and sideways/out. I am researching the significance or symbolism of the fine old design; please contact me if you know.
