Beaded Panel from Baby Carrier
Dayak, Borneo, Indonesia
Ca. 19th century
Beads, fiber
H: 9.5 in x W: 7 in :: 24 cm x 18 cm
This panel features a distinctive array of protective aso, dragon-like mythological creatures. Such designs were intended to repel sickness and to protect a child by warding off malevolent spirits. Most often, these panels were attached to the outer portion of a baby carrier. A very fine example of the genre.
