Citipati, Skull Ornament
Tibet
Ca. 19th century
Bronze, pigment
H: 2.75 in :: 7 cm
Dramatic skull face of a Citipati with high cheek bones, eye sockets and mouth. Citipati inhabit the funeral pyre; and are companions of Yama, the Lord of Death. They remind us of the precariousness of human life, yet representations of Citipati are also humorous figures in Buddhist sacred dances.
