This horse head was used as a puppet in Kore society performances which are performed throughout the Niger Valley in association with agriculture. The Bamana realize Kore as “the father of rain and thunder”. The marionettes were also used in the Ntomo society for young boys to absorb discipline prior to their initiation as adolescents into the more secretive, Kore society. An attractive example with an animated mouth, a decoratively incised brass “bridle” and good wear from age and use.
