Oil Lamp
Jerusalem, Byzantine Empire
600 AD
Ceramic and pigment
4 x 2.5 x 1.25 in. / 10 x 6 x 3 cm
Made to be used once in a Christian ceremony during the week of Easter. The mass was performed at the holy Sepulcher which is the church built over the tomb of Christ. What makes this example rare is the Greek writing that reads “the light of Christ shines for all”.
The lines are a stylized menorah which is a representation of Christ. Held high in both hands, the priest would light the lamp, representing the light of Christ. The ceremony continues to this day.
