Spring Figure, Nepal

Spring Figure
Nepal
Wood with libation patina
19th century or earlier
 27” (68.5cm) tall by 8” (20cm)  wide

A large ancient Nepalese squatting Spring figure with hands in prayer position. This type of squatting figure was set in animist shamanic shrines and important places to appease the spirits. Often libations were put onto the surface during rituals. This piece has a great dark smoky patina with remnants of libations from being used in an indoor shrine. There is some erosion to the very old wood, and small holes on the surface left form wood boring beetles, that are long gone and dead. Previously in the collection of Robert Brundage
