Spring figures were placed in shrines and along thoroughfares to imbue visitors and passersby with positive wishes and to wish them a safe journey. The hands are in the traditional Namaste greeting or prayer position. This old example has a blackened, encrusted patina with the remains of libations from its placement in an indoor shrine.
