Torgam Cabinet Panels                                                      Tibet                                                                    Ca. 19th century                                                         Wood, mineral pigments, gessoW: 15.75 in x H: 18.5 in :: 40 cm x 47 cmDoor panels of a Torgam, a ritual cabinet used to store Torma – the consecrated, ritual offering cakes of butter and barley flour. Made by monks and lay practitioners, the torma were offered to protective deities believed to defend the Buddhist teachings. Adorned with imagery of tantric offerings: sacred animals, flaming sword of wisdom, cemetery scenes, inverted skull cup brimming with offerings of the five nectars/sense organs, flaying knife, charnel ground animal skins, and birds, bell and dorje.
