Thought to be extending from pagan rituals to the sun, the masquerade tradition was sanctified by the Church for Candlemas in early February.
This gave unmarried young men and women a chance to meet and flirt. Likely from the remote Swiss valley of Lötschental. Inscribed “Rabensteiner”.
