19th century Dayak war shield. Carved from a single piece of wood with many rattan reinforcement bands that would stop the shield from splitting in battle. The backside near the handle is also reinforced with two thin wood struts. This shield has seen a lot of use and has some battle scars and some missing rattan banding in areas, as well as a very good overall dark patina from age and use.
