Winnowing Tray, Saramaka People, Suriname

Winnowing TraySaramaka people, SurinameWood24 1/2” in diameter (62 cm), 5” in depth (12.7 cm)Provenance: This was purchased by Mort Dimondstein from Jan Visser in the late 1970s.This tray is deeper and earlier than most Saramaka winnowing trays. The figures appear to be playing oliphants – this motif is unique for this type of tray. These figurative elements suggest a connection to African art, specifically the art of the Douala people of Cameroon. The Douala people were brought to Suriname as slaves. This introduces the question of whether the artist was born in Africa and was exposed to African art.
