Bowls like this are called ‘crafted lacquer bowls’ (tsukuri kanshitsu bachi) in the book Layers of Brilliance by Kendall H. Brown. In his fascinating essay, he explains their evolution from studio tools to distinctive artistic products. This is a very beautiful example of the latter.
